On Friday may 2nd 2008 I attended an event in the BMU with many different Women that were from around the world. They are foreign students discussing their experiences in the US compared to their native country. They were from Japan China India, as well as e few others. Each briefly spoke about the adjustment to the US and some of the customs and traditions back home. I could not believe how well some of them spoke English. Only a few said that they had trouble and felt like there was a language barrier. Most of them said the slang was hard to pick up on because even if they studied English you can not possibly learn that out of the country.
Some of the students said it was different here because the students were separated by gender in their native country. Some were expected to only be caregivers for their children and husband. They were not to work; however, it is getting more in more common in India, which one girl mentioned. They all seemed to hint at the fact that the man was superior in their country and women were to do as they say and not really play a dominant Role which is much different from the US. I found the girl from Saudi Arabia to be very interesting. She told us some cool facts. Like women can not drive in their country. At the end they took questions which was nice because alot of people had things on their mind.
All in all it was a great experience. It opened my eyes to the different regions of the world and their customs. It made me proud to be from the US were women can have a mind of their own. They can work or do just about anything they want and there is no since of male dominants over a women. It make me realize how far we have come.
